J. Brown, Australia, reports discovery of a possible nova in Carina on images of 2012 July 24.68UT at magnitude 9.5. Coordinates: RA 09 41 01.87 Dec. -57 59 55.7 (2000) Seiichiro Kiyota, Josch Hambsch and Rob Kaufman confirmed the presence of a reddened object at unfiltered magnitude 10.3 in a 2-min DSLR exposure on 2012 July 28.792 UT. Sebastian Otero reports the closest star to the reported position is USNO-B1.0 0320-0171500, 2" away at: RA 09 41 01.76 DEC -57 59 53.8 (J2000.0). The AAVSO on their Special Notice 292 comment that spectroscopy is needed to determine the nature of this object. Additional visual and photometric observations are also requested.
