He was the founder of Jodrell Bank Observatory which many of you will have visited from time to time to see the world-famous Lovell Radio Telescope. This telescope was completed in 1957 and is the third largest steerable telescope in the world. Bernard Lovell was knighted in 1961, and was director of Jodrell Bank from 1945 to 1980.
