Patrick was a true English amateur astronomer but became known worldwide as a writer, radio commentator and television presenter. It was in the latter role that he was particularly known through his television programme on the BBC called 'The Sky at Night'. Incredibly he had remained presenter since its inception in 1957 to the present day, a world record for a television programme retaining the same presenter. Many of TA readers including myself will have met and chatted with Patrick over the years and he occasionally contributed to our magazine. He had strong ties with the British Astronomical Association, as a former president. He was particularly loved by parents whose children sent him questions about astronomy and space and how he spent time sending them his written replies, often on postcards. His main observing passion was the Moon and in particular the many drawings he did of crater formations and other features including the Transient Lunar Phenomena (TLPs), still a matter of some debate. As with several famous astronomers of the past he also had a strong link with music as a composer and also enjoyed playing the xylophone and piano. We shall miss him greatly and our condolences to all his friends. Guy M Hurst
