Zheng et. al. (UC Berkeley) report on The Astronomer's Telegram 5822 their observations with the 0.76-m Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope (KAIT), as part of the Lick Observatory Supernova Search, starting about 5 days before the discovery by Fossey et al. The supernova was detected in KAIT unfiltered images obtained on Jan. 16.38, Jan 18.35, and Jan. 20.45 UT, but there was no detection in KAIT images obtained on Jan 10.44 and Jan 14.37 UT. A preliminary analysis of the early-time light curve is shown at: http://astro.berkeley.edu/bait/public_html/2014/sn2014J.html SUPERNOVA 2014A IN NGC 5054 (LOSS) 2014A Jan 01.58 13 16 59.36 -16 37 57.0 16.4 12.5"E 8.6"N L. Ron Arbour, South Wonston, England recorded a pre-discovery image on Jan 4.861 ar 15.8. The type-II supernova 2013bu also appeared in NGC 7331. Jujia Zhang: spectrum Jan 5 young type-Ib supernova. Comparison with earlier objects suggests a match with SN 1999ex at -6 days. Guy Hurst reports V photometry with robotic telescopes: 2014 Jan. 6.85, 15.39V (Bradford Robotic Telescope); 23.102, 15.43V (Sierra Stars). These results used the earlier sequence by Howerton developed for the study of SN 2013bu.
