------------------------------------------------------------------- THE ASTRONOMER Electronic Circular No 866 1994 July 25 19.32UT Ed:Guy M Hurst, 16,Westminster Close, Kempshott Rise, Basingstoke, Hants, RG22 4PP,England. Telephone/FAX(0256)471074 Int:+44256471074 INTERNET: GMH at AST.STAR.RL.AC.UK or GMH at GXVG.AST.CAM.AC.UK ------------------------------------------------------------------- LQ SAGITTARII P. Zhao and J. E. McClintock, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory; and A. U. Landolt, Louisiana State University, write: "LQ Sgr, a poorly known nova, is now in outburst; it is about 5 mag brighter in B than it was during quiescence. Its spectrum, obtained at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory (CTIO) 4-m telescope on July 2.3 UT, is that of an M giant. LQ Sgr is probably a symbiotic nova (i.e., RR-Tel class). During its eruption in 1897, it reached B = 13. Observations with the CTIO 1-m and 0.91-m telescopes give the following magnitudes and colors: July 5.23, V = 14.33, B-V = +1.57, U-B = +0.75; 6.24, V = 14.38, B-V = +1.55, U-B = +0.85, V-R = +1.98, R-I = +2.69, V-I = +4.67; 8.20, V = 14.40, B-V = +1.56, U-B = +0.87." IAUC 6018 SUPERNOVA 1994V IN MCG-03-38-025 R. H. McNaught, Anglo-Australian Observatory reports his discovery of a supernova (mag about I = 17) on a plate taken on July 14 by Q. A. Parker with the U.K. Schmidt Telescope. The supernova is at R.A. = 14 51 52.34, Decl. = -17 12 33.5 (equinox 1950.0;uncertainty 0".3 in R.A., 0".9 in Decl.), offset 2".6 west and 21".9 south of the centre of MCG-03-38-025 = IRAS 14518-1712. The supernova was about 0.5 mag brighter on I plates taken with the same telescope by M. Hartley on June 13 and 15, but it does not appear to a limit of R = 22 on a plate by Hartley on March 10 and on several earlier J, R and I plates. A star of magnitude about I = 16 (position end figures 51.98, 31.8), is situated only 5" from the supernova. IAUC 6022 THE ASTRONOMER ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Due to popular demand, we are holding our annual meeting in addition to the earlier Anniversary Meeting. The AGM will be on Saturday September 3rd and will be again at St.Mary's Church Hall in Basingstoke. It will start at 11am and finish at around 5.30pm. The principle speaker will be Janet Mattei, Director of the American Amateur Variable Star Observers. In addition we hope to mount a special discussion on the results from the impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 (1993e) with Jupiter. The cost of attendance at the all day meeting will be #5.00 per person to also include morning coffee and afternoon tea. In addition an optional three course cooked luncheon will be provided at an additional cost of #6.00 per person. Bookings should be sent to the Editor at the address at the top of this circular accompanied by a remittance payable to 'The Astronomer' as soon as possible. V632 CYGNI D.York, USA and Tonny Vanmunster, Standen, Belgium report an outburst of this UG star: July 12.203UT, 14.7 (York); 12.923, 14.3 (Vanmunster); 14.001, 14.5 (G.Poyner, Birmingham, UK).
