------------------------------------------------------------------- THE ASTRONOMER Electronic Circular No 1621 2001 Apr 16 10.35UT Ed:Guy M Hurst, 16,Westminster Close, Kempshott Rise, Basingstoke, Hants, RG22 4PP,England.Telephone/FAX(01256)471074Int:+441256471074 INTERNET: GUY@TAHQ.DEMON.CO.UK GMH at AST.STAR.RL.AC.UK WORLD WIDE WEB http://www.demon.co.uk/astronomer ------------------------------------------------------------------- TAV J0629+205 (=Q2001/026) Mike Collins, Everton, Bedforshire, England reports details of a new variable first spotted on 1998 Dec 20.9UT at magnitude 9.9 during photography for the UK Nova/Supernova Patrol using a 135mm telephoto lens and Kodak 2415 film. The master shot for this region, area 66, taken on 1989 Nov 6.1UT shows the magnitude of the object as 11.8mpv. The star was 'refound' and found to be bright on film taken on 2000 Feb 10.8UT (mag 10.0), 2000 Dec 2.1 (10.9) and 2001 Feb 14.9 (9.8). An image of 1990 Mar 15.9UT shows that it was not visible to a limit of 12.4. The initial position measured by Mike was: RA 06h26.69m DEC +20 33.8' (1950) and does not appear to be present in the GCVS, Name Lists or NSV. A possible candidate in the Point Source Catalog is: IRAS 06267+2033. The probable GSC candidate is GSC 1336.1209 (V=13.69) at: RA 06h 29m 41s DEC +20 31' 12" (2000) However there is also a mag 13.3 star very close, GSC 1336.0605 with end figures RA 40s DEC 19" and on the scale of the patrol film definite identification is not yet possible. For the first time, Mike submitted electronic images to the editor which were secured by using the Intel Play QX3 microscope at a magnification of x60 to obtain images from the original negatives. This gave a field of 1 deg x 1deg 20'. >From an analysis of these e-mailed images and some negatives sent by post, the editor confirms variability and the object, initially logged as Q2001/026, has been designated TAV J0629+205. We would welcome telescopic images, past and present, of this field to assist in a further investigation of the identification to establish with certainty which of this pair of GSC stars varies. An e-chart and sequence will follow on E-Circular 1622. Guy M Hurst
