Positional details of the star are: RA(2000): 01h 23m 31s Dec(2000) +03deg 53'18" Observational coverage should span the period 03:58-04:04 UT, with the expected mid-time as seen from the UK = 04:01 UT. Event Rating: Favourable, given the size of the asteroid and the fact that the predicted path passes over central England/Wales. The maximum duration of the event is expected to be about 7 seconds. N.B. The star will appear to dip in brightness by about 3.2 magnitudes (i.e. by a factor of about 20). Note that the magnitude of the asteroid will be about V=13.0. As seen from the UK, the event takes place at an altitude of about 20-25 deg above the horizon and at an azimuth position in the range of 240-245 deg. The Moon will be 50% illuminated, and situated well away (86 deg) from the star to be occulted and so will not interfere with observations. Observers equipped with telescopes of 10 cm aperture or greater may wish to monitor this extremely close appulse / occultation. Accurate timings referenced to a suitable standard are sought. Times should be recorded at least to the nearest 0.5 second preferably more precisely. A finder chart and map showing the track of the asteroid's shadow across the Earth's surface can be found at: http://sorry.vse.cz/~ludek/mp/2001/1010ham.gif Guy M Hurst ---------------------------------------------------------------- Guy M Hurst, 16 Westminster Close, Basingstoke, Hants, RG22 4PP, England.
